The Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, Inc. (Since 1957)
A Legacy of Philanthropy and Service
The Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels (HOKC), also known as "Kentucky Colonels," stands as a beacon of collective philanthropy, uniting thousands of Kentucky Colonel commission recipients worldwide in their mission to support Kentuckians in need. In 2020 alone, the organization raised over $2.9 million, providing vital grants to 177 non-profit organizations across the state.
Empowering Kentucky Communities
The HOKC's impact extends far beyond its financial contributions. By supporting a diverse range of organizations, the HOKC touches millions of lives each year, fostering positive change and empowering communities throughout Kentucky.
Preserving the Tradition, Not the Commission
While the HOKC champions the spirit of the Kentucky Colonel, it's important to note that the organization doesn't issue commissions. That power rests solely with the Kentucky Governor, a tradition dating back to Isaac Shelby's administration in 1792. Nominations for the Kentucky Colonel title can be submitted through the Governor's office in Frankfort.
A Rich History of Service
The HOKC's roots trace back to the 1930s when the idea of a social group for Kentucky Colonels gained traction. With Governor Ruby Laffoon's blessing, the Honorable Order of the Kentucky Colonels was formed in New York City in 1933. The organization's initial purpose was to unite Kentucky Colonels at the Kentucky Derby each May.
Evolution and Growth
Over the years, the HOKC has evolved into a powerful force for good. It has garnered recognition from esteemed organizations like the Better Business Bureau, Dun & Bradstreet, Charity Navigator, and GuideStar by Candid, solidifying its reputation as a trusted philanthropic entity.
Today, the HOKC boasts a vibrant community of active members and volunteers, all dedicated to upholding the Kentucky Colonel legacy through charitable giving and special events. Annual gatherings, like the Kentucky Derby celebrations and the Kentucky Colonels Barbecue, foster camaraderie and celebrate the unique culture of the Commonwealth.
The Kentucky Colonels Brand
The HOKC's influence extends beyond its philanthropic endeavors. The organization's name and associated trademarks have become synonymous with the Kentucky Colonel identity. It's important to remember, however, that the HOKC does not produce Kentucky Colonels or influence the commission process.
A Symbol of Honor and Responsibility
Becoming a Kentucky Colonel is an honor bestowed by the Governor, recognizing individuals for their notable contributions and character. Once commissioned, recipients are automatically granted honorary lifetime membership in the HOKC. Active membership, however, requires annual donations and participation in the organization's charitable activities.
Join the Tradition
If you've been commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel, consider becoming an active member of the HOKC. Embrace the opportunity to contribute to the organization's philanthropic efforts, participate in its vibrant events, and connect with fellow Colonels who share your commitment to serving the Commonwealth.
Together, we can continue the legacy of the Kentucky Colonel, making a lasting impact on the lives of Kentuckians for generations to come.
