Places Called or Named Kentucky Colonel

Since the 19th century there have been many places rumored to have been called Kentucky Colonel, this is an ongoing research project where a page will be developed for each confirmed instance.

The Kentucky Colonel was built in 1903. The hotel was considered a stylish establishment for its time. It was known for its famous fried chicken dinners and people came by train from Tulsa and surrounding communities for these scrumptious dinners. In the book, Broken Arrow: The First Hundred Years, we read that Colonel G.W. Gist, the builder of this magnificent place, “did not remain in Broken Arrow long when he found the community would not allow him to promote horse racing.”

Hotels, during this time period, were different than the establishments we stay in today while on vacation or visiting family. Settlers and pioneers to Oklahoma stayed in hotels as they built their businesses and homes. Today the site is a museum.
